Authentication (Kerberos)

Kerberos is the canonical authentication protocol used by the University of Vermont's campus-wide authentication and security infrastructure.

Support for the Kerberos protocol is built into all major operating systems, including Linux, MacOS, and Microsoft Windows. Kerberos is the heart of the University's single sign on implementation. Every UVM NetID exists as an entry in UVM's Kerberos database. Whenever you use your NetID to access a service, you're using Kerberos.

Third-party applications may be able to utilize Kerberos authentication, allowing authentication/authorization to use UVM NetIDs as opposed to application specific credentials. Check with your software's vendor to see if your software supports this.
