Domain Name System (DNS)

The Domain Name System (DNS) provides mapping of human-readable hostnames (e.g. www.uvm.edu) to IP addresses (e.g. 132.198.101.197).

UVM provides DNS service to the campus through two name servers:

  • ns1.uvm.edu (132.198.201.10, or 2620:104:e001:1002::a)
  • ns2.uvm.edu (132.198.202.10, or 2620:104:e001:1003::a)

DNS servers are hosted in different datacenters on and off campus, and have redundant configurations.

Most computers at UVM receive DNS server configuration information via Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).

If you have a server or device, with an assigned, static Internet Protocol (IP) address you would like to be able to look up using a DNS name, please write to dns@uvm.edu.
